Abstract

Abstract: Macroalgae are essential for the balance and maintenance of coral reefs. Bimonthly collections were conducted at two reefs within Mochima National Park, Venezuela (January–December 2001) using SCUBA diving (AGRRA protocol), with samples preserved in 5% formalin. Taxonomic analysis included stereoscopic microscopy, section staining using the modified Womersley technique, and specialized taxonomic keys. Thirty-five species were identified, distributed as follows: Chlorophyta (7 genera/7 species), Ochrophyta (3/3), Rhodophyta (21/24), and Cyanophyta (1/1). Filamentous and calcareous algae predominated; most species exhibited defensive strategies to mitigate herbivory. This study represents a significant contribution to the phycological knowledge of coral reefs in Mochima National Park.
