Radar Micro-Doppler Signatures for Characterization of Human Motion

Abstract

This chapter introduces the measurement and form of micro-Doppler signatures concentrating on the remote monitoring of human motion pertinent to through-the-wall applications. The micro-Doppler signature of a target may be thought of as a distinctive characteristic of the intricate frequency modulations caused by the motion of the target and its component parts. Micro-Doppler induced by micro-motion of a target or structures on the target can be formulated by introducing micro-motion into the conventional Doppler analysis. Compared to generating a micro-Doppler signature from a human motion, it is more difficult to retrieve motion information from the micro-Doppler signature of the human. The chapter provides information on multi-static micro-Doppler whereby the signature information is augmented by the addition of spatial diversity. It also provides base information for the classification of human signatures on a number of levels. For conventional radar, such as a pulse-Doppler system, the detection is a relatively straightforward matter.
