[EN] Although the competence based curricula approach has been used in the \ndevelopment of the new programmes for Master and Bachelor degrees within \nthe European Higher Education Area in recent years, the assessment of \ngeneric competences is still a pending task. This work presents a \nmethodological proposal for the assessment of the competences of capacity \nfor problem-solving and capacity for applying knowledge in practice, in \nsubjects related to mechanical and materials engineering. In particular, this \npaper proposes a scale in order to quantify the level of achievement of each \ncompetence, and shows some assessment tools developed for this purpose. \nThese tools are based on Checklists to evaluate the learning outcomes of \neach competence, that can be observed as evidences obtained from the \nassessment activities proposed during the course. These assessment activities \nare refered to the resolution of problems, individually and in groups. The \nlearning outcomes, levels of achievement and the Checklist of each \ncompetence are presented. Some preliminary results from a first attempt to \nuse this methodology in two subjects of Bachelor and Master degrees, are \nalso described here. Finally, conclusions about preliminary results and the \ndifficulties found in the development of these tools and its aplication are also \npresented.
