Abstract

Non-systematic convolutional codes have been discussed in which the information symbols are binary digits and the channel is a binary channel. This paper extends these concepts to GF(3) for rate-½ non-systematic convolutional codes. Ternary quick-look-in non-systematic codes have been obtained. An algorithm for construction of codes on the basis of sequential decoding considerations has been given. It is shown that the class of quick-look-in codes in GF(3) are ‘good’ in the sense that there exist codes of this type with minimum distance at least as great as that guaranteed by the asymptotic Gilbert bound.
